Turn an STL into an OBJ in your browser, nothing uploaded: the same shape and the same numbers, standing on Y, checked before you download it.

An STL model turned into an OBJ

OBJ opens in nearly every 3D program, which is why people turn STL files into it to sculpt, texture or animate them. KeepSimp does it in your browser, keeping the STL's own numbers.

Drop the STL and download the OBJ.

Open STL to OBJ and drop the .stl on it. The STL is read in millimetres, as printers and CAD programs write it; choose another unit if its size looks wrong.

Press Download OBJ. Before the file is offered, KeepSimp opens it again with its own reader and counts its triangles and measures its size; a file that does not match the model is not offered, and the page says what was wrong.

The same numbers, unless you choose.

Neither STL nor OBJ says its unit, so the OBJ is written with the STL's numbers by default: a part 50 mm long is 50 in both. Choose metres under Write its sizes in if the program you open it in expects metres, as Blender does.

The OBJ stands on Y, as animation programs expect, turned a quarter round from the STL's Z.

What the OBJ holds.

The shape and its normals. An STL has no colours or materials, so the OBJ comes alone, without an .mtl file.
