How to work out your percentage of marks.
How to turn marks into a percentage for one subject or all of them, and why an average of subject percentages can give a different answer.

Results often come as marks, and forms often ask for a percentage. Here is the sum for one subject and for a whole set.
One subject.
Divide the marks you got by the total and multiply by 100. 452 out of 500 is 452 ÷ 500 × 100 = 90.4%.
All your subjects together.
Add the marks, add the totals, and divide. 45 out of 50 and 80 out of 100 is 125 out of 150, which is about 83.33%. On the page, add a row for each subject.
Why an average of percentages differs.
The same two subjects are 90% and 80%, which average to 85%. That counts each subject the same, while adding marks counts each mark the same, so a subject with more marks weighs more. When totals differ, the page gives both and says which is which. Your school or board decides which it uses.
