A mile has been exactly 1,609.344 metres since the yard was fixed in 1959.
Kilometres to miles: divide by 1.609344.
10 km is 10 ÷ 1.609344 = about 6.21371 miles, and 5 km about 3.10686. Miles to kilometres multiplies, and is exact: 26.2 miles is 42.1648128 km.
Speeds work the same way.
A mile an hour is exactly 1.609344 km/h, so the same factor turns speed limits round.
Nautical miles are different.
A nautical mile, used at sea and in the air, is exactly 1,852 metres, longer than a mile. Type nautical miles to tell the converter.
