A zero-based monthly budget.
Give every part of your monthly pay a job until nothing is left over, and see what is still without one, or keep envelopes for spending.

A zero-based budget is a list that adds up to your pay. Here is how to make one.
Every unit a job.
List what each part of the pay is for, one to a line, such as Rent 1100; the page says what is still without a job, or how much the plan is over.
Where it comes from.
The idea began in company budgeting in the 1970s, where every cost had to be justified afresh each year.
Envelopes.
Envelopes set an amount for each kind of spending; type what you have spent, and the page says what is left in each and which are over.
