Calculators

How a GPA is worked out, exactly.

Grade points times credits over credits: College Board's 4.0 letter scale, weighted courses, a cumulative GPA, and a CGPA on a 10-point scale.

The Grade calculator: four courses with letters and credits making a GPA of 3.45, 48.3 points over 14 credits

A GPA is an average weighted by credits. Here is the arithmetic the Grade calculator does, with nothing rounded until it is shown.

Points and credits.

Each letter is worth points on College Board's 4.0 scale: A and A+ 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, down to D 1.0 and F 0. Multiply each by the course's credits, add them up and divide by all the credits: A (3), B+ (4), A− (3) and B (4) give 48.3 ÷ 14 = 3.45.

Overall.

A cumulative GPA joins this term with the GPA so far, each weighted by its credits, so it is never the plain average of term GPAs.

On a 10-point scale.

Indian universities give grade points out of 10; a CGPA is the SGPAs weighted by credits in the same way. Choose Points to type them.
