Much in a small square.
Make a Data Matrix code for parts, electronics and labels, or PDF417, Aztec, Micro QR and rMQR: what each 2D barcode is for, made in your browser.

A Data Matrix code holds dozens of characters in a square a few millimetres across, and still reads with part of it scratched away. The KeepSimp Data Matrix generator makes one in your browser, and PDF417, Aztec, Micro QR and rMQR too.
Data Matrix.
Type what it holds: a part number, a serial, a short text. The square grows as you type more; its error correction (ECC 200) is fixed by the standard. For GS1 data, choose GS1 DataMatrix on the GS1 page instead. Leave a clear margin of at least one module round it.
PDF417, Aztec, Micro QR, rMQR and MaxiCode.
PDF417 is a stack of rows, on boarding passes and ID cards. Aztec has a bull's-eye in the middle and needs no margin, which suits screens. Micro QR is a QR code with one finder for very little; rMQR is long and low for narrow places, made at the lowest height that holds your text. MaxiCode is a parcel carrier's code of a fixed size.
Read back exactly.
Each code is read back with zxing-cpp and compared with what you typed before it says it scans. Download it as SVG, PDF or EPS for a label printer's software, sharp at any size.
