Time

GMT to EST: five hours, mostly.

New York is five hours behind GMT, and London keeps BST in summer. Convert GMT or London time to Eastern Time, with the weeks when the gap is four hours.

Converting GMT to EST is a sum of hours, until the clocks change. Here is the gap, and when it moves.

The gap.

GMT is the same as UTC, and New York is five hours behind it in winter: 14:00 GMT is 9:00 am EST. In summer London keeps BST (UTC+1) and New York EDT (UTC−4), so London and New York are still five hours apart. Type London rather than GMT when you mean London's time in summer.

When the clocks change.

The US changes its clocks two or three weeks before the UK in March, and a week after it in autumn, so for those weeks London and New York are four hours apart. The clock for each place says when it next changes.

Type it and see.

Type a time with both names, such as 9am GMT to EST, and the answer says the time and the day there, with what each abbreviation was taken to mean. Add more places after a comma, and add tomorrow or a date to look ahead past a change of clocks.
