A little help along the way
Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath. Everything happens in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
- Choose how longPick 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes or 5 minutes above the words. A minute is chosen already. Under More options, a test can end after a number of words instead.
- Choose what to typeCommon words are the thousand used most. Passages from books are real sentences with capitals and punctuation. Numbers are groups of digits, as in data entry.
- Start typingThe clock starts with your first key. Type each word and press Space to go on to the next; a wrong word can be gone back into with Backspace. On a phone, tap the words to bring up the keyboard.
- Read your resultYour words a minute and the share of keys you pressed right come first, then raw speed, consistency, a chart of every second with your mistakes, and the words you typed wrong.
- Go againTab then Enter, or Esc, starts a new test. Again gives you the same words, so you can see whether you did better; New text makes new ones. Watch it again plays your test back as it was typed.
Questions people ask
- Can I use this result for a job application?
- Not as proof. The test runs on your own device with no one watching, so it gives no certificate. Employers that ask for one name the test to take; this is for practising until your speed is comfortably above what they ask.
- Where do the passages come from?
- From classic books in the public domain, such as Pride and Prejudice and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, with their capitals and punctuation kept. The book is named under the words.
- Is my speed counted as net words a minute?
- Yes. Words a minute counts only the words you typed right, which is what employers mean by net. Raw speed, which counts every character, is shown beside it.
