How it works and help

A little help along the way

Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath. Your browser records and saves the video on this device; nothing is sent anywhere.

  1. Choose what to recordScreen records a tab, a window or your whole screen. Screen and me adds your camera in a round bubble in a corner, like a video message. Just me records only your camera.
  2. Choose the soundMy microphone records your voice. Sound from the tab or computer records what is playing, where the browser gives it: in Chrome and Edge, tick Share audio in the browser's window. Firefox and Safari give no sound with the screen, so only your microphone is recorded there.
  3. Press RecordThe browser asks what to share (a tab, a window or your entire screen) and whether this site may use the camera and the microphone. Then a 3, 2, 1 countdown that is not recorded gives you a moment to get ready.
  4. Pause, go on, stopWhile recording, the page shows the time, the size so far and how loud the sound is. Pause leaves no gap in the video. In Chrome, Controls in a small window keeps Pause and Stop in front of every other window. Stop, or the browser's Stop sharing, ends it.
  5. Save it or edit itThe recording is copied into a finished file, opened again and checked before it is offered. Download saves it as MP4 (or WebM). Edit it opens it in the Video editor to cut the start and end, crop it or make it smaller.
  6. On a phoneBrowsers on phones and tablets cannot record the screen, so the recorder records your camera. Use the phone's own screen recording (Control Centre on an iPhone or iPad, Quick Settings on Android), then open the video in the Video editor.
  7. KeysAlt or ⌥ + R: Start recording, or stop and keep it. Alt or ⌥ + P: Pause, or go on.
Every option explained
Quality
Standard records at up to 1080p, sharp enough to read text, about 2.8 GB an hour at full size. High goes up to 1440p for fine detail; Small is 720p, to send or share. A smaller screen or window takes less. The recording keeps one size throughout: a window of another shape shared later gets black bars.
Frames a second
30 is plenty for slides, apps and talking. 60 is smoother for games and fast scrolling, in a larger file. A screen that does not change is recorded by repeating its last picture, so the video always has a steady rate.
Format
MP4 holds H.264 video and AAC sound and plays everywhere; its index is put at the front, so it starts at once on a website. WebM holds VP9 and Opus. The browser is asked what it can write before recording, and when it cannot write what you chose the page says what it used instead.
Sound
Your microphone and the shared sound are mixed into one stereo track. Echo cancelling keeps the computer's sound from your speakers out of your microphone; on Automatic it is on whenever that sound is recorded too. Chrome and Edge give a tab's sound everywhere, and the whole computer's on Windows and ChromeOS, and on a Mac from Chrome 141 on macOS 14.2.
Camera bubble
A circle or a rounded picture in any corner, small, medium or large, filled from the middle of your camera's picture. It is drawn into the video, so it stays where you put it whatever you share.
No pointer highlighting
A page cannot see the pointer outside its own tab, so clicks are not circled. The pointer itself is recorded as the browser shows it.
Long recordings
There is no time limit. The video is written to this device as it is made, never held whole in memory, and needs about twice its size while it is finished. The page says when the device is short of room, and stops by itself, keeping everything, before it runs out. The screen is kept awake while recording.
Keep a draft
With this switch on, the recording is kept on this device as it is made, so a closed tab or a crash does not lose it: open the page again and press Finish it. It is deleted when the recording is finished. The switch starts off every time.
Private
Recorded by this browser and saved on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere. The camera and microphone are asked for only when you press Record and let go of when you stop.
