Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or kept.
A little help along the way
Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath. Everything happens in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
- Choose how longPick 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes or 5 minutes above the words. A minute is chosen already. Under More options, a test can end after a number of words instead.
- Choose what to typeCommon words are the thousand used most. Passages from books are real sentences with capitals and punctuation. Numbers are groups of digits, as in data entry.
- Start typingThe clock starts with your first key. Type each word and press Space to go on to the next; a wrong word can be gone back into with Backspace. On a phone, tap the words to bring up the keyboard.
- Read your resultYour words a minute and the share of keys you pressed right come first, then raw speed, consistency, a chart of every second with your mistakes, and the words you typed wrong.
- Go againTab then Enter, or Esc, starts a new test. Again gives you the same words, so you can see whether you did better; New text makes new ones. Watch it again plays your test back as it was typed.
Every option explained
- Words a minute
- Every five characters count as a word, spaces included. The characters of the words you typed right, with the space after each, over five, over the minutes. In a timed test the word you are typing counts for the letters typed right so far.
- Raw
- Every character you left typed, right or wrong, over five, over the minutes: how fast your fingers moved.
- Accuracy
- The keys that typed the right character over all keys that typed one. A mistake you put right still counts; Backspace counts neither way.
- Consistency
- How steady your speed was from one second to the next, from 0 to 100, worked out as Monkeytype works it out.
- Not counted
- A result is shown but marked not counted when the test was shorter than 15 seconds, faster than 350 words a minute, under 75% accurate, had a pause of 5 seconds or more, or the device's clocks did not agree.
- Mistakes
- Under More options a wrong letter can stop you until the right one is typed, or a wrong word can keep the space from moving on. Backspace can go back into any word, only into wrong ones (the usual), or not at all.
- Reading
- Letters from 16 to 48 pixels, a monospaced or an ordinary font, wider spacing, and a caret drawn as a line, a block or an underline. Screen reader announcements say each next word and each mistake.
- Leaving the page
- When the page loses focus the clock stops, and starts again with your next key; the time away is not counted.
- Texts
- Word lists come from Monkeytype (GPL-3.0) with rude words taken out using LDNOOBW's list. Passages come from classic books in the public domain, named under the words.
