Add, take away, multiply or divide fractions
Type two fractions, mixed numbers such as 1 1/2 or decimals. Every step is shown, down to the simplest form.
Write 3/4, a mixed number as 1 1/2, or a decimal. Leave the second empty to simplify the first.
The answer
3/4 + 5/6 = 1 7/12
19/12 as a fraction, 1.58(3) as a decimal
How it is worked out
- Find a common bottom: the smallest number both 4 and 6 go into is 12.\frac{3}{4} = \frac{9}{12},\quad \frac{5}{6} = \frac{10}{12}
- Add the tops and keep the bottom.\frac{9}{12} + \frac{10}{12} = \frac{19}{12}
- As a mixed number: 1 whole and 7/12 left over.\frac{19}{12} = 1\frac{7}{12}
A little help along the way
Follow these steps. Everything is worked out exactly in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
- Say what you want to doWork with fractions is the usual. The others simplify a ratio, find x or share out a total, turn decimals and fractions into each other, and work with picture sizes.
- Type the numbersFractions as 3/4, mixed numbers as 1 1/2, ratios with colons as 12 : 18, and repeating decimals with brackets as 0.1(6).
- Read the answer and every stepThe answer is drawn as a textbook would, with each step under it.
Questions people ask
- How do I type a mixed number?
- Write the whole number, a space and the fraction: 1 1/2 is one and a half. You can also type ½, a decimal such as 0.75, or a negative such as −2 1/3.
- Does it show the steps?
- Yes: the common bottom it finds, how the tops are added or multiplied, how a fraction is turned upside down to divide, and how the answer is simplified and written as a mixed number.
- Can it simplify one fraction?
- Yes. Leave the second box empty and the first is simplified, with the number that divides the top and the bottom said.
