Simplify a ratio
Type the ratio with colons, such as 12 : 18 or 1.5 : 2.25 : 3. It is brought to its smallest whole numbers.
12 : 18 simplified
2 : 3
1 : 1.5 with the first as 1
- Part 1: 2 of every 5, which is 2/5 or 40% of the whole
- Part 2: 3 of every 5, which is 3/5 or 60% of the whole
How it is worked out
- Divide every part by 6, the largest number that goes into all of them.2 \mathbin{:} 3
Every fraction is kept exact, step by step, on your device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

- Say what you want to doWork with fractions is the usual. The others simplify a ratio, find x or share out a total, turn decimals and fractions into each other, and work with picture sizes.
- Type the numbersFractions as 3/4, mixed numbers as 1 1/2, ratios with colons as 12 : 18, and repeating decimals with brackets as 0.1(6).
- Read the answer and every stepThe answer is drawn as a textbook would, with each step under it.
Questions people ask
- How do I simplify a ratio?
- Divide every part by the largest number that goes into all of them. 12 : 18 is 2 : 3, since 6 goes into both.
- Can it simplify a ratio with decimals?
- Yes. It first multiplies every part by the smallest number that clears the decimals, then divides: 1.5 : 2.25 : 3 times 4 is 6 : 9 : 12, and dividing by 3 gives 2 : 3 : 4.
- Can it turn a ratio into percentages?
- Yes: under the answer, each part is given as its share of the whole, as a fraction and as a percentage. 2 : 3 is 40% and 60%.
