Fraction and ratio calculator

Fractions and mixed numbers with every step, ratios simplified, scaled and solved for x, decimals to fractions and picture sizes. Free, with no account or uploads.

Do
+−×÷

Write 3/4, a mixed number as 1 1/2, or a decimal. Leave the second empty to simplify the first.

The answer

3/4 + 5/6 = 1 7/12

19/12 as a fraction, 1.58(3) as a decimal

3/4
5/6
1 7/12

How it is worked out

  1. Find a common bottom: the smallest number both 4 and 6 go into is 12.\frac{3}{4} = \frac{9}{12},\quad \frac{5}{6} = \frac{10}{12}
  2. Add the tops and keep the bottom.\frac{9}{12} + \frac{10}{12} = \frac{19}{12}
  3. As a mixed number: 1 whole and 7/12 left over.\frac{19}{12} = 1\frac{7}{12}

Every fraction is kept exact, step by step, on your device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

A little help along the way

Follow these steps. Everything is worked out exactly in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

  1. Say what you want to doWork with fractions is the usual. The others simplify a ratio, find x or share out a total, turn decimals and fractions into each other, and work with picture sizes.
  2. Type the numbersFractions as 3/4, mixed numbers as 1 1/2, ratios with colons as 12 : 18, and repeating decimals with brackets as 0.1(6).
  3. Read the answer and every stepThe answer is drawn as a textbook would, with each step under it.
Every option explained
Mixed numbers
A whole number, a space and a fraction: 2 3/4. Answers bigger than one are given as mixed numbers and as fractions.
Simplifying
Leave the second fraction empty to simplify the first. Every answer is simplified, and the number divided out is said.
Repeating decimals
Write the digits that repeat in brackets, 0.1(6), or end with dots, 0.1666… A fraction's decimal is shown with a line over the digits that repeat.
Picture sizes
Give a width and height in pixels for the aspect ratio and the common shape it is, and a new width or height that keeps it.
