The working
  1. Mean = sum ÷ count = 40 ÷ 8 = 5.
  2. Take the mean from each number, square it and add: Σ(x − mean)² = 32.
  3. Divide by count − 1 = 7: variance = 4.5714.
  4. Standard deviation = √variance = 2.13809.
  5. Quartiles by straight lines between the sorted numbers at (n − 1) × ¼ and × ¾, as Excel's QUARTILE.INC and NumPy do; other methods give other quartiles.
How it works and help
Sums and means are exact; worked out in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere or kept.

Questions people ask

What are mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum over the count, the median the middle value once sorted, and the mode the value that appears most often.
What if there are two modes, or none?
Every value that appears most often is listed; when no value repeats, the page says there is no mode.
Is the mean exact?
Yes. Sums and means are worked out as exact fractions, so 0.1 + 0.2 is 0.3.
