Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept unless you turn on Keep my results on this device.

A little help along the way

Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath. Everything happens in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

  1. Choose how longPick 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes or 5 minutes above the words. A minute is chosen already. Under More options, a test can end after a number of words instead.
  2. Choose what to typeCommon words are the thousand used most. Passages from books are real sentences with capitals and punctuation. Numbers are groups of digits, as in data entry. Code is short pieces of programs, Lessons teach the keys a few letters at a time, and A game has words drift in to clear.
  3. Start typingThe clock starts with your first key. Type each word and press Space to go on to the next; a wrong word can be gone back into with Backspace. On a phone, tap the words to bring up the keyboard.
  4. Read your resultYour words a minute and the share of keys you pressed right come first, then raw speed, consistency, a chart of every second with your mistakes, and the words you typed wrong.
  5. Go againTab then Enter, or Esc, starts a new test. Again gives you the same words, so you can see whether you did better; New text makes new ones. Watch it again plays your test back as it was typed.

Questions people ask

How do I choose which word to type?
The first letter you type chooses the word nearest the middle that starts with it, and rings it. No two words on the board start with the same letter when it can be helped. Backspace lets go of the word.
How are points counted?
Each word cleared gives its number of letters times the level. The level goes up every ten words, and words then come more often and move faster.
Can I pause the game?
Yes: press Esc or Pause, and press it again to go on. The game also waits by itself when you switch to another tab.
