What you can do
- As many pictures as you likeUp to 300 in one PDF: JPEG, HEIC from an iPhone, PNG, WebP and more, each upright as it was taken.
- Pages in the order you wantDrag them, turn them, copy or take them out, or sort them by name or date. Every change can be undone.
- A4, Letter or the picture's own shapeWith or without a margin, and a JPEG can go in exactly as it came, with nothing lost.
- Nothing is uploadedPictures are read and the PDF is written in your browser, and it works offline.
Scan with the camera to photograph pages one after another: each is found, straightened and made to look scanned as it is taken.
A little help along the way
Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath, and nothing you add leaves your device.
- Add your picturesDrop up to 300 pictures, choose them, paste one with ⌘V or Ctrl+V, or try the sample. JPEG, HEIC from an iPhone, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, BMP and JPEG XL all work. The maker opens in its own window.
- Put the pages in orderThe pages are on the right. Drag one to move it, or its grip on a touch screen. Click a page to look at it large; ⌘ or Ctrl chooses several and Shift a run, to move, turn, copy or take out together. Put in order sorts them by name or by date.
- Or scan with the cameraPress Scan with the camera, point the phone at a page and press the shutter, or leave Auto on and hold still. Each photo becomes a page at once, straightened and cleaned. The browser asks once to use the camera; nothing is installed or uploaded.
- Straighten photos of paperWhen a photo holds a sheet of paper, the maker finds its edges and offers to straighten it: the page is cut out, made flat and given its true shape. Press Crop and straighten to move the corners yourself, with a magnifier as you drag or the arrow keys.
- Make it look scannedChoose a look for the page: Auto makes the paper white and takes shadows out, Greyscale does the same without colour, and Black and white keeps only the ink, for the smallest file. Give every page the same look with one press.
- Turn what lies on its sidePhotos are shown upright as the camera recorded them. Turn any page left or right with the buttons under it or the R key.
- Say what your pictures areUnder PDF, choose Documents (the usual: sharp and a smaller file) or Photos (each kept as it came, on a page of its own shape), then the page size: Fit the photo, A4, Letter or Legal. If an email or a form has a limit, turn on “Must be under a size?”. Which way up, the margin and the exact quality are under More options.
- Make the PDFPress Make PDF. The file is opened again and checked against the pages you saw before it is offered. Download it, read it in the window, or open it in the PDF editor to sign it, add page numbers or make its words searchable.
Every option explained
- A4, Letter and Legal
- Every picture is placed on a sheet of that size, as large as it fits and in the middle. The maker starts on the paper used where your browser's language says you are: Letter in the United States, Canada, Mexico and some other countries, A4 elsewhere.
- Fit the photo (Like the picture)
- Each page is the shape of its picture, at 150 pixels to the inch, with no white around it. Good for screenshots and pictures that will only be read on a screen.
- Which way up
- To suit each picture turns the sheet so a wide picture lies on a wide page. Portrait or Landscape keeps every sheet the same way, which is what printers and forms that ask for one usually want.
- Best, Balanced and Smallest
- Best puts a JPEG in as it came, its picture data byte for byte, and other photos in as JPEG at quality 92; drawings and screenshots are kept without loss. Balanced makes a photo no larger than the page needs at 300 pixels to the inch, and writes other photos as JPEG at 85. Smallest writes every picture as JPEG at 70 and up to 150 pixels to the inch, for email and upload forms with a size limit. Each page says how its picture is kept.
- Scanning: Auto and the shutter
- The camera's picture is looked at a few times a second for a sheet, which is outlined. With Auto on, a photo is taken when the sheet has been held still for about a second, and the next only once you have moved on to another page. The shutter takes one whenever you press it. Where the phone has a light, the camera offers it. Where the browser cannot show the camera, the phone's own camera opens instead, one photo at a time.
- Finding the page in a photo
- The maker looks for the straight edges of a sheet against what it lies on, and the four corners they make. It works best with paper on a darker or plainer surface, the whole sheet in the photo. It judges by looking and can be wrong, so the corners are shown and can be moved, and the whole photo can be put back.
- Its true shape
- A sheet photographed at a slant looks like a trapezium. The maker works out from the perspective how wide the sheet really is for its height, so an A4 letter comes out A4, and a shape within 2% of A4, Letter or Legal is taken to be that paper.
- Original, Auto, Greyscale and Black and white
- Original keeps the photo's colours. Auto estimates the light falling on the page, makes the paper white and takes shadows and a colour cast out, keeping ink and pictures their colour. Greyscale is the same in shades of grey. Black and white judges every pixel against the brightness around it and keeps only ink and paper, stored without loss in a way made for text (JBIG2): a page is usually a few tens of kilobytes.
- Keep the file under a size
- Choose 1, 2, 5 or 10 MB for an email or a form that takes files only up to a size. When the PDF comes to more, its pictures are made smaller step by step, down to 72 pixels to the inch, until it fits, and the result says what they came to. If even that is too large, it says so: take out pages, or make two PDFs.
- Make the words searchable
- Reads the words of every page with Tesseract, on your device, and lays them over the page, unseen, so the PDF can be searched and its words copied. The first time, Tesseract and the language are loaded from this site and kept. It can misread, above all small or handwritten words, so check names and figures.
- Keep these pages on this device
- Off unless you turn it on, each time the page opens. On, your pictures and pages are kept in this browser, so they are still there if the page closes; the next time, the maker offers to open them. Turning it off or starting again deletes them.
- Pictures from an iPhone
- HEIC photos are read on your device and written into the PDF as JPEG, which every PDF reader can show. Photos are shown upright as the phone recorded them.
- See-through pictures
- A PDF page is paper, so the clear parts of a PNG or WebP show white.
- Limits and privacy
- Up to 300 pictures in one PDF, each up to 100 MB and 50 megapixels. Pictures are read and the PDF is written in your browser; nothing is uploaded. Where a photo was taken, the camera and the date it recorded are not copied into the PDF.
