A little help along the way

Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath. Your file is read on your device and never uploaded.

  1. Say what you want to getChoose Word to edit, Excel table, Pictures, Plain text, or PDF from Word. A page opened for one job, such as PDF to JPG, has chosen already.
  2. Add your fileDrop a PDF or a Word file (.docx), choose one, or paste it. A locked PDF asks for its password. Look through it opens the PDF to read before you convert it.
  3. Choose the pagesAll pages is the usual. Choose pages takes numbers and ranges, such as 1-3, 7, 10-.
  4. ConvertPress the big button. A bar shows how far it has got, and Stop ends it. The result is opened again and checked before it is offered: a Word file read back by another program, a workbook's cells read back, every picture decoded, a PDF opened with all its pages.
  5. Read what it becameThe result says what was made in words, such as 12 pages became a Word file with 3 tables and 8 pictures, and what to check: pages that are scans, headers and footers left out, or what OCR read.
  6. DownloadDownload gives the file; many pictures come in one ZIP. Change a setting and the result is made again when you press the button.
Every option explained
Word to edit
A .docx with the PDF's paragraphs, headings, bold and italic words, fonts, sizes and colours, its tables cell by cell and its pictures at the size shown. Word lays the words out again, so the layout may differ from the PDF: lines and pages can break in other places.
Excel table
Each table found on the pages becomes a sheet (or each page's tables share a sheet). Tables are found by their ruling lines and by how their words line up. A cell that is plainly a number, such as 1,234.50, 12% or (300), is stored as a number shown as the PDF writes it; 007 stays text. When no table is found, each page's lines become rows, cut into cells where words stand far apart.
Pictures
Each page drawn as a JPG or PNG at 72 to 600 dots to the inch (150 unless you choose otherwise), or the pictures the PDF holds, each at its own size and kept once. A page that would be too large a picture is drawn at fewer dots to the inch, and the result says so.
Plain text
The words in the order they are read, column by column, with tables as rows whose cells are parted by tabs, paragraphs and pages parted by an empty line.
Read scanned pages (OCR)
For Word and text: pages with no text are drawn and read by Tesseract on your device, in the language you choose. The first time, Tesseract and the language are loaded from this site and kept. OCR can misread: the result says how sure it was.
Headers and footers
Lines at the top or foot of pages that repeat on at least half of them, and page numbers, are left out of Word and text files unless you keep them. The result says how many.
PDF from Word
A Word file (.docx) is read by mammoth and laid out on A4 or US Letter with the margins you choose. It keeps the words, headings, lists, tables, links and pictures in a simple look of its own, not Word's fonts, spacing, headers and footers or page breaks. Old .doc files, Excel and PowerPoint cannot be converted here yet.

Everything runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, and nothing is kept when you leave.
