Password protect a ZIP
Make a ZIP that opens only with a password, locked with AES-256 or ZipCrypto, on your device. Free, with no account or uploads.
Choose a password and type it twice. AES-256 is strong; Windows Explorer and the Mac's Archive Utility cannot open it.
Drop files to make a locked ZIP
Folders keep their own folders inside the ZIP. Add more at any time before you make it.
Made on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
A little help along the way
Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath. Everything happens in your browser; nothing in the archive is sent anywhere.
- Open the archiveDrop it on the page or press Choose a file. For a ZIP cut into parts (.z01, .z02 … .zip, or .001, .002 …), choose every part at once. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no size limit but your device's.
- See what is insideThe page says how many files there are and how large they are once taken out. Folders open with a press; Find a file looks through every name. Press the eye beside a file to preview a picture, text, sound or a video.
- Type the password, if it has oneLocked files show a padlock. Type the password you were given and press Unlock. It stays on the page and is never kept.
- Choose the filesEvery file starts chosen. Untick what you do not want, or tick a folder to choose everything in it.
- Take them outIn Chrome and Edge on a computer, Extract into a folder writes the files with their folders into one you choose. In every browser, Download saves one file as it is, or several as one ZIP your device opens by itself. Each row has its own download button too.
- Check for damageCheck for damage reads every file in full and compares it with the checksum it was saved with, then names any file that does not match.
Questions people ask
- Should I choose AES-256 or ZipCrypto?
- AES-256 when the person has 7-Zip, WinZip, WinRAR or Keka: it is strong. ZipCrypto when they can only use what their computer came with: it opens almost everywhere, but it is easily broken.
- Why can my Mac or Windows not open the locked ZIP?
- Windows File Explorer and the Mac's Archive Utility do not open AES-256. Open it with 7-Zip or another program that reads AES, or in the Zip and archive tool in any browser, or make it again with ZipCrypto.
- Does the password hide the names of the files?
- No. In every ZIP the password locks what is in the files; their names, sizes and dates can be listed by anyone. Rename a file before you lock it if its name gives too much away.
- Can a lost password be recovered?
- No. The password is never kept by the page or by KeepSimp, and an AES-256 ZIP with a good password cannot practically be opened without it. Keep it somewhere safe, and send it apart from the ZIP.
This page is the Zip and archive tool, opened for this one job; every other tool it has is one press away. Each of its settings is explained on the Zip and archive tool's own page.
