- Check for damageCheck for damage reads every file in full and compares it with the checksum it was saved with, then names any file that does not match.
Questions people ask
- Is my tar.gz uploaded anywhere?
- No. It is read and unpacked in your browser, a piece at a time, and the files are written to your device. The only limit is the space on your disk.
- Why does taking out one file take as long as all of them?
- A tar.gz has no index: gzip packs the whole tar as one stream, so reaching a file means unpacking everything before it. From a plain .tar, each file is read straight from its place.
- What happens to links inside the archive?
- Symbolic links are listed and never made, so nothing can point outside the folder you chose. A hard link is taken out under its first name. Devices, named pipes and sparse files are listed and left out, with the reason.
- Are permissions and owners kept?
- No. A browser cannot set a file's owner or permissions, so a script that could be run comes out as a plain file, and files get today's date. Use tar -xzpf on the machine itself when they must be kept.
- Does it open tar.xz or tar.bz2 files?
- Yes. tar.xz, tar.bz2 and tar.zst open as a tar.gz does, and so do single .xz, .bz2, .zst and .br files. It makes only tar.gz and tar, though.
This page is the Zip and archive tool, opened for this one job; every other tool it has is one press away. Each of its settings is explained on the Zip and archive tool's own page.
