How it works
- 1Add a photoDrop it in, choose it, or paste it.
- 2Say what you want to doMake it look better, crop it, add words, hide a part or draw on it.
- 3Download itThe same kind of file at the same size, without its location.
Nothing is uploaded: the photo is edited and saved on this device.
A little help along the way
Follow these steps. Every option is explained underneath. Everything happens in your browser; the photo is never uploaded.
- Say what you want to do, and add a photoChoose an answer to What do you want to do? (Make it look better is the usual), then drop a photo, choose one or paste one. The editor opens full screen on that tool; the others are in the bar of tools, beside the photo on a computer and along the bottom on a phone.
- Make it look betterPress Auto, or tap a look: each is shown as a small picture of your photo. Then set Light, Colour and Detail in words, such as Darker, As taken or Brighter. Exact values and the look's strength are under Fine-tune.
- Crop, turn, flip or straightenTurn Shape on and choose Original, Square, 4:5, 16:9 or 9:16, or drag the crop's corners freely. Turn left or right, flip either way, and drag the dial to level a horizon.
- Add wordsPress Add words, type them, and drag them into place. Choose a font, a colour, a size and a box behind them.
- Hide a partDrag over what should not be seen, and choose Blur, Pixels or Box, as a rectangle or an oval. Box is the safe choice for anything private.
- Draw on itChoose a pen or a highlighter, a colour and a thickness, and draw on the photo.
- Compare, undo and downloadHold the photo while Looks is open, or hold Compare, to see it as it came. Undo and Redo go through every change. Download writes the same kind of file at the same size.
- KeysCtrl or ⌘ + Z: undo; Ctrl or ⌘ + Shift + Z: redo; M: hold to see the photo as it came; C: crop and straighten; Ctrl or ⌘ + S: download; Escape: leave what you are doing, or close the editor; +: zoom in; -: zoom out; 0: fit the photo to the window.
Every option explained
- Auto
- Auto measures the photo's lightness and the colour of its grey parts, then sets the editor's own settings: light for a dark photo, contrast for a flat one, calmer bright parts where white is lost, lifted deep shade, and half of a colour cast taken back. They are ordinary settings you can see and change.
- Light
- Light changes the whole photo as a camera's exposure does, in linear light: +50 doubles it. Brightness lifts or deepens the middle tones and leaves black and white. Contrast pulls dark and light apart. Bright parts and Dark parts change only the upper or the lower half of the tones.
- Colour
- Colour makes colours stronger or weaker without changing their hue (it works in OKLab), and Grey takes them all away. Warmth goes from blue to golden and Tint from green to pink, as a camera's white balance does, keeping grey as light as it was.
- Detail
- Sharpness strengthens edges (or softens them below As taken). Edges darkens or lightens the corners, a vignette.
- Straightening
- The photo is turned about its middle by up to 45° either way and enlarged just enough to fill its frame, so no empty corner shows, as phones do it. The pixels are blended where they fall between others; turns, flips and crops copy pixels exactly.
- Blur, pixels and a solid box
- Blur and pixels hide a part from the eye, but software can sometimes read a little back, numbers and letters especially. A solid box leaves nothing of what was under it.
- Fonts
- Ten fonts with open licences come with the site: Inter, Outfit, Montserrat, Anton, Bebas Neue, Archivo Black, Bangers, Permanent Marker, Pacifico and Roboto Mono. The whole font is loaded before the file is written, so no letter is drawn in another.
- The file
- JPEG stays JPEG (MozJPEG at quality 90), PNG stays PNG without loss, WebP and AVIF stay as they are, at the photo's own size. HEIC, TIFF, JPEG XL, GIF, BMP, ICO and SVG are saved as JPEG, or PNG when they have see-through parts. Location and camera details are left out. On a phone, a photo larger than 24 megapixels is made smaller first, and the page says so.
- Private
- The photo is opened, changed and written in your browser, and never uploaded. Nothing is kept when you leave.
